THIS WEEK'S EVENTS AT THE LOST DOG CAFE

Binghamton, NY

SEPTEMBER 7, 2010 (TUESDAY 7 P.M. IN THE VIOLET LOUNGE)
Science Cabaret presents Liza R. Moscovice "Getting By With A Little Help From Their Friends: Why Social Bonds Matter For Monkeys". Free & Open to the Public!
About the talk: Humans gain major health benefits by maintaining strong and stable social support networks. However, we are not the only species that benefits from positive social relationships. In fact, in a wide range of other animals including laboratory rats, feral horses and wild monkeys, social support can reduce stress and improve reproductive success and longevity. But why does social support have such important effects on health? And how do animals form and maintain positive social bonds? Are there parallels between animal social bonds and human friendships? This talk will explore these questions using long-term field research on wild chacma baboons. About the speaker: Liza R. Moscovice is a primatologist and a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Binghamton University. She has been studying primate social behavior in captive and field settings for over a decade. Her publications include work on social learning in cotton-top tamarins, behavioral flexibility in wild chimpanzees and most recently research on the benefits of social bonds for chacma baboons. In the field she combines observational sampling with non-invasive methods for collecting genetic samples to determine relatedness, and hormone samples to characterize affiliation. In addition to her research, she currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in animal behavior, evolutionary theory and behavioral endocrinology within the Evolutionary Studies Program at Binghamton University Science Cabaret is a free montly event held on the first Tuesday of the month. It is free & open to the public. Doors open at 6:00 pm for those who want dinner or drinks, talk begins at 7:30. Science Cabaret was started at Lost Dog Cafe by David Sloan Wilson, SUNY Distinguished Professor Departments of Biology and Anthropology, Director of EvoS. Science Cabaret was insipred by the Cafe Scientifique movement (http://www.cafescientifique.org) which started in Europe in the late 1990s and has spread rapidly. Cafes Scientifiques promote public engagement with science by eschewing a lecture format in favor of informal talks on topics of broad interest, which are used as a jumping-off point for group discussion. Sessions usually take place once a month in social venues such as pubs or cafes.
